Take a Trip to Alaska: Halibut Fishing

Halibut fishing is the most popular sporting activity in Alaska. If you have plans of going on a halibut chase, you need to have an experienced angler by your side. That is mainly because Alaska halibut fishing can be an exasperating activity for the novice. If you haven't tried it before, you should know that halibuts are extremely cunning creatures. To drag them onboard, you must have several things in mind.

First and foremost, you'd better not sail in deep sea without a guide. You need someone who knows these waters thoroughly. ProFish-n-Sea has specialized in educating Alaska fishing guides and charter captains who can take you whenever you like. The best person to take onboard is ProFish-n-Sea himself- namely, Steve Zernia. Mr Zernia is a second- generation Alaska Charter Fishing Captain. He is the one with the greatest halibut fishing experience, and he also knows by heart the best sea routes. If you are really eager to thrill to the real Alaska halibut fishing, you'd better find Steve. He is available both for experienced anglers and novices. His main aim will be to make you feel to the bones everything about halibut fishing. He will help you on your first halibut trip and will guide you with priceless advice.

The second thing you need to have in mind is that Alaska can offer you a tremendous abundance of different species of fish. They are all eager to peck at your bait. The only thing you need to know is how to catch them after they are hooked. To most fishermen from other places on Earth a successful fishing trip is measured by the number of bites, hookups or fish landed onboard. The thing that strikes most on an Alaska halibut fishing trip, is that measures are changed. Success is determined by pounds of halibut meat. Alaska halibut fishing is your way to feel the immense bounty of Alaska's fishery. A six-passenger Alaska halibut fishing boat can catch as much fish as a commercial long-liner. With a pinch of luck and appropriate conditions, every hooked up halibut will eventually end up onboard. For more information click Alaska Halibut Fishing

Alaska halibut fishing requires the angler to have the strength and patience to pull the rod until the fish is out of the water. And that could be a difficult task for the inexperienced. The halibut having taken the bait doesn't necessary ensure the catching of the fish. The tackle should be strong enough to endure the pressure. That is why you need a guide to show you how to do it properly and not turn the catch into a failure. Steve has a lifetime of experience in Alaska halibut fishing and can show you everything you need to know about it. When hooked, a sly Alaska halibut would dive straight down and a novice can easily be pulled to the rail or even worse: let go of the fishing rod. You must have the energy to keep the rod until the fish are exhausted and give it up. And that, as Steve Zernia would teach you, is the real chore. A guide will help you develop the basic fishing techniques necessary for a successful catch. Steve will give everything to teach you so that your first Alaska halibut fishing brings you satisfaction and doesn't turn into a nightmare.

Fly Fishing - Where Sport And Craft Combine

There is no sport as versatile or as widespread as fishing. It is a sport that can be undertaken as cheaply or as expensively as you wish. Five year olds in bare feet and overalls can attach a piece of string to a stick, bend a paper clip, and attach a worm and have as much fun as the billionaire fishing enthusiast with a deep sea fishing boat, lines, tackles, rigging, harpoons, shades and champagne. Fishing is a hobby and a living, a sport and a serious occupation.

One of the most popular methods of fishing is fly fishing. Fly fishing is done with a specially designed rod and reel combination that allows the sportsperson to cast their line in the direction of the water and then slowly reel it back in.

Fly fishing is appropriately named. In contrast to lure fishing, fly fishing requires the fisherman to fool the fish into thinking that the fly is one of the fish's favorite meals skimming along the surface of the water. Lure fishing appeals to the lazy underwater fish, often attracted by shiny metallic objects and enticed to bite on the hook with some piece of edible or edible appearing bait.

Fly fishing is designed to attract fish at specific times of day by their feeding instincts. The lures for fly fishing are called flies, and are in fact a cheaper way to go, generally speaking, than the lures needed in lure fishing. Fly fishers often tie their own flies, using bits of hair and cloth around the house or farm.

Flies are designed to appear as the kind of prey that fish in the specific area are feeding on at a given time. This can include all manner of insects and insect larvae.

Though it rankles on the lure fisher to have it said, fly fishing is a much more challenging form of the sport. The fly fisher must constantly have her arm in motion, casting the line, playing it out and reeling it in patterns made to emulate the movement of the prey species. When a fish is hooked, it takes a skilled fisher to land the animal.

Fly fishing also involves a certain amount of study, in order for the venture to be successful. Fishers must do their research into what kind of species they are hoping to catch, and in turn what kind of species their targets are feeding on. This information can change seasonally, day to day, and even has different applications during different feeding times.

Fly fishing is an excellent way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air while participating in an enjoyable sport and getting some exercise. It takes some practice, but is highly addictive and a sport that never gets old.

Two Hot Tips for Bass Fishing

Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in Bass fishing and this has led to many new business sprouting up to ride along with the wave of excitement. Hooking, pardon the pun, new Bass anglers is easy. All you have to do is to invite them for a Bass fishing trip and before you know it, they are now passionate about the sport. Businesses seek out hot interests like a heat seeking missle and we see resorts, sports gears and fishing related things being built - all with the aim to capture this hot market. As a Bass angler, clearly we have benefited from all these interests.

Right now, more and more are getting their feet wet to learn and find out what the big bass buzz is all about. For the uninitiated, Bass fishing is more than just fishing. Having a prized big bass in your hands and the opportunity to show it off is a feeling that is hard to describe. Only those who have done it will know the feeling and once you have done it once, you want to do it over and over again. But after the first bass fishing expedition, for the beginner, there is still lots more to learn.

First, you have to know the lures that you must have to enjoy bass fishing.

What the top 3 lures for catching Bass? No real surveys have been conducted but it is generally agreed by pro bass fishermen that plastic worms makes the best lures, followed by the spinner bait and then the crank bait.

After considering the lures, there are still other factors to consider, chief of which is how you intend to cover the waters

in your fishing. Do you want to cover a smaller segment of water thoroughly or do you want to skim across a larger area as quickly as possible to find fishg. Worm baits are very effective and Bass are absolutely seduced by it. However, worm baits tend to be slower and are best in certain areas which will come with experience.

One main problem with learners fishing with a worm is that they do not realise that the worm does not have the ability to sense strikes. And the main reason for the inability to sense them is due to the fisherman using a sinker that is too heavy and a line that is too thick.

To overcome this predicament, a variable buoyancy worm using lead strip sinkers can be adopted. The advantages are:

* No moving lead on the line to dampen the feel of a gentle pickup
* Precise amount of lead can be applied to deliver the worm action needed
* Bass finds it easier to inhale the worm
* It helps in hook setting
* In snags, you can quickly shake yourself loose
* Worms can be hung virtually suspended over the bottom when fishing in shallow water.

To tell how much lead strip is needed, wrap one strip around the hook and bury the barb in the worm. Ease it into the water

and watch it sink, it should barely settle toward the bottom. If it sinks to fast, take some off, etc. Make sure to use no heavier than 8-pound mono line - preferably 6 pound.

How much lead strip do you need? Well, one tested way is to wrap one strip around the hook and bury the barb in the worm.

Now, gently ease it into the water and watch it sink. It should barely settle toward the bottom. If it sinks too fast, start

again by taking some off, etc. Use a mono line that is no heavier than 8-pounds - preferably 6 pound.

Spinner baits, by virture of its construction, can move more quickly across the surface. It can be bounced on the bottom,

against tree limbs and moved in many different ways in order to stimulate strikes. It is a great probing lure for the shoreline because of its tangle-free construction.

Lastly, Crank baits are great if you want to check out a spot without wasting too much time. They cover a lot of water in a hurrry and you can use them for locating fish that may be scattered.

The most important rule is this - make it easy for the Bass to get to the lure - no matter where you are fishing in. Drop that lure right in front of them! Scientists have proven that Bass can calculate the amount of energy it will take them to go after the prey and if they decide its too much effort, they won't bother.

The bottom line is this - discover and learn to use each type of lures and find what suits you. Once you find the right one for you, you will really find enjoyment in bass fishing!

Aside from considering the lures, the other important factor is to know the accurate time in going for bass fishing.

The Biggest Bass are definitely caught at dawn or dusk. Remember - bass love to prey at ambush spots, which seems to offer lots of cover for the baitfish. They like to hide, and then pounce on their prey.

These bait fish are most active in the dusk or dawn. When they feeding, the bait fish's guard is down and less aware of threats, So that is when the bass strikes. Fish during these times for the best chances of success.

When retrieving an underwater lure in poor light conditions, pull in the lure at a steady pace once it is set in motion. This makes it easier for bass to locate and grab it.

Although I mentioned that dawn or dusk is the best time to fish for bass, there is one exception. Don't bother trying when

the water is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature causes certain aquatics species to disappear, which in turn, nullifies the food chain feeding.

Just by keeping these 2 factors in mind for bass fishing - lures and the time to fish - you are on your start to winning the

game of bass fishing. Once mastered, you can then consider other factors like water quality and weather conditions. Happy Bass fishing!

Fishing Etiquette 101

The other day I had the chance to take two of my sons fishing. I discovered that one of the local ponds had been stocked the day before with approximately 2200 rainbow trout. All between the 10-12" range. Some even trophy size meaning 12" and above. Needless to say I wasn?t the only one to hear of the stocking. Every local fisherman in the metro area must have been there. It was a complete zoo along the banks of West Salish Pond. Furthermore, I am not sure that any one of them knew anything about proper fishing etiquette.

Since becoming an avid fisherman a few years back, the 1st thing my fishing buddy and best friend taught me was the rules of the water. I can still hear his words ringing so clear to me. "If you don't learn the do's and the don'ts of courtesy around here, it won't take long before one of these guys kick your rear straight into the river". Since then I took special notice of what they were doing, and NOT doing.

As I watched all these seasoned vets fish the water, one thing was clear. They were all fishing with a sense of unity among each other. One of the most important things I noticed was how you cast. When another guy or group of guys is in the middle of the drift, you don't just cast your line out there over the top of them. You gotta wait your turn to get into the water. When you cast over someone, it doesn?t take much to get tangled up. Depending on how many lines you cross, it can become a mess real quick.

Which takes me back to my situation at the pond where my boys and I were fishing. I had my line, and my two boys' lines out there sitting about 2-3 feet apart. Along comes another fisherman, whips his stuff out there, and SPLASH! right over all 3 of our lines. Within minutes, when we began to check our line/bait etc...I noticed all 4 poles starting to bounce like we had bites. Not the case. What we had was 4 lines all pulled together due to 1 bad cast that went unchecked and uncared for.

Guys we all have our reasons for going fishing. Food, relaxation, fun, teaching, or just for the sport. At the top of my list is FUN and SPORT. How much fun can it be when you?re having to reel in your line and untangle all day? Don't get me wrong, not every cast is going to go where you want it too. But when your cast does get away from you...fix it. It makes it more pleasant and easy to fix early, rather than later after you have tangled up with everyone else.

As my day went on, it ended up getting more and more frustrating as the same guy continued to cast wherever, and we had to adjust where and how to fish around him. Ever try fish yourself, for the guy next to you, and 2 other little ones??? UGH! After about 1 hour (if that) I couldn?t take it anymore and threw in the towel, "Boys, let's pack up, we will try again another time". And so ended our day of fishing.

It?s my hope that maybe this will remind us to be courteous to other fisherman, and to follow some simple guidelines when fishing. Here are some friendly reminders to think of...

1. Watch where you are casting. If you have a bad cast, bring it back and do it again.

2. Yield to the space of the guy next to you (Unless combat fishing, that's another article). There?s plenty of space for everyone.

3. Watch for crowding of another ones fishing area when they are getting bites. If your neighbor is getting bites, chances are you will too.

4. Make friends. Have fun with one another, get to know who's next to you. You will find a lot of knowledge with other fishermen. Getting to know them and their techniques will increase your chances of catching fish.

5. Try and make room for the little ones. Be polite to someone trying to get their kids into fishing. The only way to keep a kid's attention on fishing is for him/her to be catching, not fighting with the person next to them.

Fly-Fishing in Southern New Mexico (Coyote Books (Albuquerque, N.M.).)
This unique guide leads the fly-fisherman to little-known trout waters in the remote mountains and canyons of southern New Mexico. Part One reviews trout species in southern New Mexico, fishing regulations, and safety tips. Part Two describes trout streams and lakes in southwestern New Mexico: the Gila National Forest, Pinos Altos Range, Black Range, Mogollon Creek System, San Francisco River system, and Blue River. Part Three is devoted to the waters of the Sacramento Mountains, Zuni Mountains, and the Rio Grande.

All descriptions of major drainages include a chart listing the location, available maps, elevation, length, best times to fish, fish species, and fishable tributaries. A map accompanies each drainage system. The authors offer directions to the streams and lakes, describe both main stems and fishable tributaries, and offer tips on how best to fish them. An appendix describes the important aquatic insects of the Gila National Forest.

An overview of the streams of Southern New Mexico which support trout, the natural history of the streams, and the habitats of the trout which live there.

Things To Know About Fly Fishing!

Fly fishing is one of those sports where you get out what you put in.
If you put in a genuine effort you will get lots of fun and excitement from the sport.
Anyone who takes up fly fishing must have patience, be willing to practice their cast and be willing to learn about their chosen sport.

You must be willing to learn new ideas and practice them, but not keep switching from one to another. Anyone doing this will not perfect anything, always changing one idea for another and not allowing to get anything right. The ones with knowledge about their tackle, the place they are fishing at and the fish they are trying to catch will have much more success than those who just turn up not knowing anything of what they are trying to do.

There are more than 10,000 different types of flies and to find the best one for the job can be trial and error. As a rule you use bright flies on a sunny day and dark coloured flies on a cloudy or overcast day.

The green butt skunk fly is mainly black with a bright green piece of yarn, these flies are used a lot for Salmon but also used around the world with good effect.

The jock scott is one of the best flies for most seasons and waters. This delicate fishing fly can take hours to make with lots of different materials involved.

The thunder and lightening is a deep orange, gold, brown and black, perfect for cloudy or dark days and cloudy waters. This is one of the most popular fishing flies for catching salmon today. These are just a few of the most popular fishing flies used but you do not have to stick with these, if you find a fly that works for you then great.

Dry fly fishing is when you cast your fly to a predetermined spot on the water and try to get the fish to attack the fly, but also trying to strike before the fish spits the fly back out.
Wet fly fishing lets the fly sink just under the surface and pass by the fish causing the fish to strike at the fly. The most common fish to catch with a fly are salmon, trout and most fresh water fish.

Below are some of the terms associated with fly fishing which may help you understand?
Pool an area of water where it is fast flowing and entering a deeper pool of water.
It offers good prospects of a variety of fish in the area where the water flows in.

Riffle an area where the fast flowing water is broken up by some solid object in the water, the area just behind the object in the water is often good as insects will settle here and so will the fish.

Dead water is as the name implies, very still with no current and not usually a good place to fish.

Some of the other places to find fish is where there is a shady area or vegetation growing out of the water.

Thoughts about florida keys sport fishing
Egg, Red

The Red Egg Fly is good for fishing for trout in salmon rich costal rivers or fishing your local trout stream around spawning time. Fish certainly know that these tasty glowing orbs mean a good meal. Be careful in wading around spawning beds and careful to set the hook quickly to avoid injury as trout will often inhale these things.

Midge, CDC, Olive

This Olive CDC Midge is among the very best adult midge patterns available. It works well when fished early in a midge hatch or when midges are available to trout but not mating. Larger sizes also work well for fish taking chironomids on lakes.

Peeking Caddis Pupa, Yellow, Reversed Colors

A very effective free swimming caddis imitation, the Yellow Peeking Caddis Pupa Fly uses a soft hackle to give the impression of movement and bright color to invite strikes from aggressive fish.

Pale Morning Dun, Comparadun

The PMD Comparadun provides a great mix of lifelike silhouette, visibility, and buoyancy. Many fly fishing guides go straight to comparaduns when a PMD hatch brings up actively rising trout. This fly pattern floats in all but the fastest and roughest stream currents and trout seem to prefer this fly to many of the traditional hackled patterns. Fly fishers around the world should consider this a staple fly where PMD or similar mayflies are present.

Fishing Boat Setup- How Can I Improve My Setup?

One of the worst things when it comes to day fishing would have to be having a poor fishing boat setup. Ensuring that your fishing boat is well equipped to handle a day on the lake or ocean is imperative to success and even safety. When it comes to a fishing boat setup, much of the fine details come in the way of convenience and accessibility. Having the appropriate electronic devices such as fish finders and GPS can indeed make all the difference in the world when it comes to a good day of fishing.

With sensible applications such as live wells, rod locks, and navigation equipment a boat will easily be prepared to meet the rigors of a long day on the lake. Ensuring that your fishing boat setup includes flares, life jackets, and emergency response transmitters only facilitates the sensible boating needs. With the addition of such fine luxuries as fridges, cooking equipment, radios, and or Televisions you ensure that you are not left in boredom when the fish just are not biting at any given moment.

When it comes to fishing boat setups and storage, one only need ask themselves, just how much equipment and people am I planning on carrying on this vessel? This question will follow with sensible storage needs, as there are many pieces of fishing gear for each angler aboard. This does not in any way answer the question fully as there are many other articles that could be found or stored in a fishing boat. Often times people will include fresh dry clothing in their storage compartments, for those little mishaps that always seem to happen when you least expect. All of this can be chalked up to good fishing boat setup.

Depending on the size of the vessel will primarily determine what type of fishing boat setup you will be able to have. For obvious reason a smaller vessel will be able to carry small loads and will no doubt have less storage than a bigger vessel. When you have a smaller boat it seems that proper fishing boat setup becomes far more apparent as there is a limited capacity and acceptance for passengers, their goods, and the storage allowable will quickly decrease in size should you not plan ahead and make accommodation. Look to ensure that your fishing boat setup is appropriate for the type of fishing you plan on doing and that you have a clear decision on what would be most beneficial to the day on the lake.

Rio Intermediate Aqualux Fly Line

A must-have line for the serious lake angler. Castability has always been a problem with clear intermediate sinking lines because there are no lubricants in the coating and the lines drag through the guides. RIO has solved the problem by incorporating proprietary lubricants into the running line coating that make the line slick. The running line is translucent green while the head is completely clear. With an intermediate sinking rate of 1.5 – 2.0 inches per second (3.7 cm/s), the line is perfect for fishing subsurface and shallow shore lines. Ideal when stealth is required for wary, selective fish. Made on a low memory supple monofilament core with a coldwater coating and welded loop on the front end. Size : WF3I - WF9I Length : 100 ft (30.5 m) Color : Clear AquaLux head with green tint running line

Rusty, Spinner, Xelon

Rusty Xelon Spinners are especially effective patterns after the hatch when fish seem to rise consistently but refuse traditional hackled adult mayfly patterns. Fly fishers casting to selective trout find that the transluscent Xelon or Z-lon wings on these spinners gives them the realistic impression that makes the difference.
