Choosing the Correct Fishing Rod
When it comes to fishing rods, what the heck does it all mean? There are all kinds of things written on the fishing rod itself, and all of them have a different "feel". I'm going to attempt to clear up some of the confusion for you, although at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference. I've seen a lot of anglers that have one fishing rod that they use for all of their fishing. This is a mistake and a sure fire sign that said angler doesn't catch many fish. I'm not suggesting that you should have a locker full of 50 different rods, but you should have two or three available for different situations. Fishing rods come is the basic actions listed below. This information is printed (in very small lettering) on the rod itself, directly above the handle, along with suggestions as to lure and line sizes. My suggestion is that you have at least three rods to choose from for ant given fishing situation. Ultra light Action - these rods are used for fishing very small lures. Ultra light rods are perfect for small stream and river fishing, such as when you're wading. The heavier the current, the longer rod you will want. Ultra light rods are a great choice for trout and pan fish. Light Action - Light action rods are used for the same situations as ultra light action rods. If you're just starting out, start with a light action rod and work your way to ultra light. Again, these rods are perfect for trout and pan fish fishing. Medium Action - Medium action rods are right in the middle of the scale (imagine that). Medium action rods are to be used when wading larger rivers for larger fish. I personally use medium action rods for my walleye and smallmouth bass fishing in Canada. Medium action is also a good size for trolling smaller lures. Medium Heavy Action - This size rod is great for trolling most lures. Medium heavy rods are also great for most salmon and steelhead fishing. As the name suggests, these rods are to be used in situations where you're after bigger fish (10 to 20 pounds as a general example), although it's also a favorite size for large mouth bass anglers. Heavy Action - Obviously, these are your big boys. Largemouth bass fishermen will use rods this size to fish heavy cover and the like. Also, when you're fishing for big pike and muskie, heavy action rods are a must. These rods are used for really big fish (over 20 pounds as a general example). This action rod is also used for heavy trolling, such as that done with downriggers. After this brief overview, you should have a better understanding of what the different actions of fishing rods mean to you as an angler. As mentioned earlier, you will probably want at least three different fishing rods for different fishing situations. That way you can pick and choose as the situation changes. As an example, I use my four foot ultra light rod for most of my small river and stream fishing, but in the springtime, when the water is really high, I switch to my five foot six inch ultra light rod. Landlocked Salmon Atlantic Salmon are know only in the State of Maine. Some of the other names are Sebago Salmon or Quananiche and the scientific name is Salmo Salar. The average size is 16-18 inches and 1-2 pounds, but 3-5 pound fish are not uncommon. Adults are generally silvery wiyh a slightly forked tail and small x-shaped marking on the back and iper sides. Juvenile salmon have a dark red spot between each pair of parr marks. Mature males develop a kype or hooked jaw, during the spawning season.
Landlocked salmon are a freshwater form of the sea run Atlantic Salmon. Prior to 1868, landlocked salmon populations occurred in only four river basins in Maine, St.Croix including West Grand Lake in Washington County, the union, including Green Lake in Hancock County, the Penobscot, including Sebec Lake in Piscataquis, County, and the Presumpscot, including Sebago Lake in Cumberland County.
Today, landlocked salmon provide the primary fishery in 176 lakes comprising nearly 500,000 acres. They are present and provide incideatal fisheries in an additional 127 waters comprising about 160,000 acres. Maine supports one of the larges sport fisheries for this species in the world. Landlocked salmon also provide good fisheries in 44 rivers and streams totaling about 290 miles.
Hatchery stockings are needed to maintain fisheries in 127 lakes. These lakes do not sufficient amounts of suitable spawning and nursery areas to produce wild salmon. Without regular stockings, salmon in these lakes would disappear entirely, or their numbers would be very, very low. About 123,000 salmon were stocked annually in Maine lakes from 1996 to 2000.
Natural reproduction supports salmon fisheries in 49 lakes. These are lakes that have sufficient spawning and nursery habitat to produce enough salmon to support good fisheries. Most of these waters are located in western and northern Maine. Salmon spawn in lake outlets or inlets during the period from mid October to late November. Eggs are buried in gravel from 4-12 inches deep and remain there until hatching early the following spring.
Young salmon spend from 1 to 4 years in a stream environment prior to migrating to a lake. Recent studies in Maine show most wild salmon spend 2 years as stream dweelers. In wild salmon populations, most males spawn first at ages 3 and 4, although a few spawn at ages 1 and 2. Females usually spawn first at ages 4 and 5. Spawning runs of wild salmon may be composed of fish ranging in age from 1 to 10 but 3, 4 and 5 year old individuals make up the bulk of most runs. Landlocked salmon may be repeat spawners, but most fish observed on spawning runs are spawning for the first time. Salmon may spawn in consecutive or alternate years, some may spawn in consecutive years then skip a year, and some may skip 2 or 3 years between spawning.
Salmon populations sustained by natural reproduction often more older age fish those supported by stocking, wild salmon usually exhibit slower growth do hatchery salmon, so they reach legal size and harvested 1 or 2 years later. The oldest landlocked salmon on record in Maine was years old.
Rainbow smelts are the principal forage species for salmon in Maine lakes. Without adequate numbers of smelt, salmon growth and body conition will be poor, markedly reducing value as a sportfish. Maintain adequate numbers of smelt for forage is the most important element of salmon management in Maine. Extensive studies conducted in Maine clearly show that salmon growth rates, and consequently the size of fish available to anglers, is best in lakes with excellent water that do not have large populations of other smelt predators, particularly lake trout.
From 1996 to 2000 Maine open water anglers voluntarily released over 60% of their catch of legal salmon, ice anglers released about 25% of their legal salmon catch. Catch and release of salmon has improved fishing in many lakes, but in others it has resulted in depressed smelt populations and smaller salmon, because there are too many salmon. Maine fishery biologists have responded by reducing stocking rates by implementing fishing regulations designed to restore a reasonable balance between numbers of smelts and salmon.
Hatchery salmon generally provide fisheries for larger fish than do wild salmon because the number of smelt predators can be strictly controlled. Therefore, precise management for particular types of fisheries, such as those emphasizing trophy fish, is usually best achieved with hatchery stocks rather than wild stocks.
From 1996 to 2000, the average size of salmon harvested from all Maine lakes was 17.4 inches and 1.7 pounds, the largest since department fishery biologists began conducting scientific creel surveys in the 1950?s.

You?ve heard about the fellow who decided, after some heavy drinking, to go ice fishing. So he packed up all his equipment, his auger, catch covers, catch cover sleeves, scoop, rods, reels, lines, bait, bobbers, split shot, ice pick and propane heater, and off he staggered, down to the ice. He picked up his auger and was about to start cutting the hole, when a voice boomed down from above: ?There are no fish under the ice.? He shook his head. Was he hearing things? Must have imagined it. So he started again, and again the voice rumbled, ?I said, ?There are no fish under the ice!?? The drunk looked up and asked nervously, ?Is that you, Lord?? ?NO!? the voice replied, ?This is the Ice Rink Manager!? Rika and I decided to take the scenic route back from Kelowna, BC, where I delivered a talk last week. On the way, we saw some people ice fishing in the middle of a lake. So we pottered across the lake and went to talk with them. This was the first time we?d ever seen anybody ice fishing. The friendly fisher folk told us very interesting stories. The ice was twelve inches deep. Fascinating! Anyway, it reminded me of the joke, above. In life and in business, I have found that we often waste time getting information from the wrong people or dealing with the wrong people. We tend, sometimes, to fish where there are no fish. It?s like asking a bank manager about a business opportunity or a virgin about childbirth. With time so valuable, we should be very clear about how we spend it, and whom we spend it with. I talked with a chap recently who told me he attended ten business networking meetings and only met one good prospect. When he factored in the wasted time, gas, parking, membership fees, and so on, he felt he had wasted a lot of time and money, fishing where there were no fish. There?s a simple rule of thumb to prevent disappointment: Do your due diligence and qualify people before you spend time on them. Check them out ? Google them ? do a Better Business Bureau check ? ask for references and testimonials ? call your friends and ask if they know them. Ask more questions. Be direct. Spend more time on the phone and e mail qualifying them before you give away information or go to a meeting with them. Ask them if they can make a buying decision and if they have the money and authority and when they intend buying or deciding. You will save time and money and catch good fish. The Winter Olympics.... Once again the fishing world has been ignored. As I sit watching a spine tingling, heart thumping, always tension packed Olympic Curling event competition, I can't help but wonder why a fishing event has never been represented in the Olympics. What are they trying to say? Are they saying that there is no athletic prowess involved when trying to flick a #12 Adams to a 20 inch ring created by the kiss of an 18 inch Rainbow trout! Is the firing of a high powered rifle after skiing around on a pair of wooden planks any more demanding than fording a riffle packed stream and tossing a chunk of powerbait deftly into the "honeyhole" pocket containing an 8 inch stocker? I see no difference. But then I'm an idiot. Or am I? Let's at least take a look at some future options for the winter Olympics, that can finally give the fisherman his due when it comes to skill and athleticism.... 1) What event shows stamina and grit more than ice fishing? I propose a winter Olympic event that is comprised of ice fishing. In this event, contestants will be timed on their ability to saw a hole in 8 to 10 inches of a frozen lake surface, run in sneakers across the frozen ice to a designated staging area where they will grab up a rod, and stool, and sprint back across the ice to the open hole, bait up, and sit for hours in a fierce northern wind. The athlete then will hopefully, eventually catch a fish, pull his fish from the ice hole, drop it in a bucket, and sprint again across the ice, into a 1975 Ford pick- up truck, drive across the finish line to the cheers, flag waving,and cow bell jingling of his fellow countrymen. More challenges? Perhaps a couple of fellas name Swen and Ole can sit across from the contestant and constantly be throwing a verbal barrage of "You Betcha's" and "Don't ya know's" at the athlete, as he or she agonizingly attempts to coax a fish out of the water. Talk about grit!! Of course the Norwegian contingent might not have a problem with this and be at a decided advantage.HOW do you say "you betcha" in Norwegian anyway? We will all watch as the hole starts to skim over with ice,and the athlete frantically chips away at the hole to keep it ice free.All the while precious time clicks away as the fish only nibbles at the bait. They can even hold this event indoors at the Olympic Hockey or Figure Skating venues. It might even make the hockey games more interesting with a few holes in the ice, and figure skating?PLEASE... a double axle into a gaping hole in the ice will add more excitement than Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan living in the same trailer park. Or they can leave a few frozen fish on the ice to help add to the Olympic ambiance. The events could also easily be held as a "two man" competition with one athlete fishing, while the other builds an ice shack. If the extreme thrill of the Downhill is your cup a tea, imagine if they hold the event on thin melting ice. The now famous runs of Franz Klammer and Hermann Maier will pale in comparison to the crackling of ice beneath the ice fisherman's stool as he scrambles for shore before disappearing into the frigid waters. Talk about the agony of defeat.... 2)Boat Slalom. Never mind the luge, bobsled, or skeleton(which at first glance appear to require the two major athletic skills of courage and alcohol), try standing up in a drift boat while running a classIV rapid with a 40 pound salmon stripping line off of your reel, hell bent for return to the ocean. Yes, athletes in ten layers of clothing including the mandatory flannel outer jacket, will try to stay afoot while "the driver" navigates the boulder choked channel of a stream. Not only are the contestants timed in this event, but style points are given for the degree of difficulty the athlete shows while doing "gunnel grabs", "spins", and the ever popular "aerials". Throw in a number of slalom gates, and you have the making of an event made for television. Fall in or lose your salmon, and it's sorry Charlie--see you in four years. "OOOHHH, tough break Vern--Elwood has been training all his life for this moment, and to see it all go overboard in one instant is heartbreaking...." 3) No offense to our Canadian friends north of the border, but --CURLING!!! CURLING!! A combination of bowling on ice and a group of shop keepers trying to keep the storefront spiffy. Gawd, the winters must be awful up there. Outside of the obvious "sex appeal"of the Olympic Curling
events, the only thing more thrilling would be to watch Dick Cheney go quail hunting. But, given that there is a place on the podium for chiseled curling athletes, I'm sure we could find a spot for the skilled athleticism of the Winter Fly Tying Team !
This event would obviously be dominated by the American squad, which has trained year round in a meat locker in Detroit. Size #28 midge after miserable size #28 midge, the Americans have relentlessly been training, by tying these little buggers to 8x tippet--in a meat locker kept at 14 degrees below zero. That's minus 26 celsius for our European competitors. There at the Olympic Fly Tying arena, in frigid weather, teams of fly tiers will take to the vice, and tie up various flys. We will watch pained expressions and complete intense concentration as athletes try to get their fingers to work in the icy cold. We will hold our breath as they try to get the hackle and dubbing just right. Precious time will tick away as they blow on their hands, and we watch split screen images of just where the Olympic hopefuls lost time along the way. Of course,in this two day event, athletes will be judged on speed, style,difficulty, and the ability to catch and release fish. So, here's to the athletes of the XX th Olympiad, and I will see you fishing rod in hand, in Vancouver in 2010. A.J. Klott
